Village, Sinchon

Village, Sinchon

Does it take a village to brew a beer? We went to check out Village, Sinchon, a brand new gastro pub and restaurant in the popular and student-heavy area between Yonsei, Ewha and Hongdae.

The exterior of the three story building immediately strikes you as modern and minimalistic, very much in contrast to the more typical surrounding architecture. Village opened less than a month prior to our visit, and must be one of the newest additions to this otherwise popular area.

Village owns the whole building, and their concept is spread over the three floors. On the second floor, they have a little garden with seating, which we may want to come to check out in the spring. Their taps are on the second floor restaurant behind the counter, but we head all the way up to the gastro pub on the third floor.

Beer concepts

The concept is built around the diversity of a village, with all the beers being named after different classic professions. Sailors, Farmers, Shoemakers, even Mystics and Minstrels, everyone gets their say in this beer menu. Some of the beers are also quite unique concepts, like the Rice Lager and the Ginseng Lager.

Our favorites of the night are the Oatmeal Dark Ale and the Rice Lager, with the Rye Weiss on a good third. Overall we feel the playful beer concepts have good bases with a lot of potential, but partly fall short in the execution. Village is a completely new place, and they may need some time to fine-tune all of their recipes. Starting off with around 10 house beers is ambitions, and we hope they will be able to bring out the unique profiles of each brew!

Food and cocktails

The food menu ranges from smaller snacks to full meals and sharing platters. We got some truffle fries, which were thin and crispy and came in a generous amount. There are also a few other drinks on the menu, like ginger beer and lemonade, but the most interesting part is definitely the seasonal beer cocktails.

We did get one glass of the Espuma Oatmeal Dark Ale cocktail, emerging as the surprising champion of tonights drinks. The added espresso shot, cream and cinnamon blended well with the dark ale, and made for a great desert. Definitely a winter drink! We hope they will be able to make more cocktails that fit the seasons this well.

IKEA-heavy interior

Interior

Plain white surfaces dominates the interior, and makes for a modern and sleek vibe with playful industrial hints: Specks of gold, partly exposed construction, accent light, bricks and huge windows. A lot of the furniture is from IKEA’s newest collections, which means simple, modern and functional without being intimidating. Modern music plays at a pleasant volume, and the guests vary from dating couples to friend groups of all ages. Not as student heavy as you might expect in Sinchon!

There was a fun vending machine near the bathroom, stocked with all the Village beer on cans. It did not appear to be more than decoration, but may be foreshadowing the release of canned beer.
