Ark, also known as Korea Craft Brewery, has been one of the core suppliers of craft beer in Korea with several classics in their lineup. We went to check out their pub and bottle shop in Gangnam, where you can get draft, bottled and canned beer from Ark and a couple of foreign breweries, comfortably sheltered from the busy Gangnam streets.
Since Ark has been around for a while, even casual beer drinkers will probably recognize a couple of names on the menu, like the signature Be High (IPA), Hug Me (White Ale) and Cosmic Dancer (American Wheat). All of them good, balanced beers with relatively stable quality over the years, and an obvious place to start getting to know Ark.
You can broaden your beer horizons with the rest of Ark’s lineup, or move on to their surprisingly diverse bottle list, which also has a take-out discount. With everything from Hitachino Nest and Stone to Chimay and BFM, curious beginners, craft beer enthusiasts and Gangnam oppas looking to splurge on something fancy and foreign, will all find something that appeals to them. And there’s a food menu too!
In itself, the venue is small and cozy, with the typical hard surfaces and industrial elements that make for a relatively loud carpet of ambient chatter and music. Neon signs, fairy lights and rustic bar food add up to a classic Korean craft beer experience, the pub fairly densely packed with various seating for large and small groups. The semi outdoor seating area is sealed off with plastic to combat the elements, and holds an acceptable temperature both in the searing summer and freezing winter.
All in all a cozy little pub with a versatile menu, making it good for casual work outings with local craft beer and snacks, as well as a tasters’ night out browsing the menu and coolers for some surprises. The location is surprisingly good, just a few minutes walk from Gangnam station itself, but tucked away in a side street to a side street, shielding you from the crowds and noise.
